Restoring Independence and Confidence
OUR MISSION
The K9 Comeback Project exists to give second chances where they matter most—saving dogs and strengthening lives.
We partner with rescues, shelters, and professional training facilities to identify overlooked dogs and transform them into highly trained service dogs for individuals living with physical or psychiatric conditions.
By reducing the financial barriers that often prevent families from accessing service dogs, we work to close the gap between need and independence—while also addressing the urgent issue of shelter overcrowding. Our mission is rooted in compassion, access, and empowerment—for both people and dogs.
Are you a Rescue or Shelter that has a dog you think would qualify for training?

Our Origin Story
Sometimes, a life-changing mission begins with one dog who simply needed someone to see him.
For The K9 Comeback Project, that dog was Kobe.
When founder Kristin Maher adopted Kobe, he had already spent nearly 10 months in a shelter, continually overlooked because of his size and breed. At 100 pounds, Kobe was not the easiest dog for someone to choose. But beneath his imposing appearance was an extraordinary dog with the biggest heart and one of the calmest, most loving dispositions Kristin had ever known.
Kobe didn't just become Kristin's dog. He became her lifeline.
After Kristin's husband passed away, she found herself navigating a grief that was difficult to put into words. For more than a week, Kobe was the reason she got out of bed each morning. His presence provided comfort when nothing else could. His companionship brought moments of peace during an incredibly painful time.
As Kristin began to heal, she noticed something else: Kobe had a remarkable ability to bring comfort and joy to other people.
She envisioned training him to become a therapy dog so that he could share with others the same sense of comfort and hope he had given her. She wanted his difficult beginning to become part of something meaningful.
There was only one problem.
Kristin couldn't afford the professional training necessary to make that dream a reality.
Kobe never became the therapy dog she had envisioned.
But the dream didn't disappear.
Instead, it became the beginning of something much bigger.
Over the next four years, Kristin continued refining a vision for an organization that could address the very barriers she had experienced firsthand. She began asking a simple question:
What if a deserving shelter dog didn't have to be overlooked simply because no one had yet seen their potential?
And then another:
What if that same dog could become the reason someone else gets out of bed on their hardest day?
That vision became The K9 Comeback Project.
Today, our mission is built around the belief that there are extraordinary dogs sitting in shelters and foster homes simply waiting for their opportunity to be seen. Dogs who may have been overlooked because of their breed, size, age, behavior, or circumstances. Dogs who, with the right environment, training, and advocate, could become something extraordinary.
At the same time, there are people navigating some of life's most difficult moments—individuals living with disabilities, PTSD, anxiety, mobility challenges, and other circumstances where the right canine partner could provide comfort, confidence, companionship, and greater independence.
We believe those two needs can become one powerful solution.
The K9 Comeback Project rescues at-risk dogs, provides the care and professional training they need to reach their potential, and thoughtfully matches them with individuals whose lives can be changed by their partnership.
Kobe showed Kristin what one overlooked dog could mean to one person.
The K9 Comeback Project exists to give that opportunity to many more.
Because the dog waiting to be seen may be someone else's reason to keep going.
And the person waiting for hope may be exactly what gives that dog a second chance.
One Dog. One Person. Two Lives Changed.
Kobe's story is where our journey began.
Now, with the support of our donors, volunteers, fosters, trainers, community partners, and advocates, we have the opportunity to make sure his story doesn't end with him.
It becomes the beginning of every K9 Comeback.
